Secondary Exchange 2003

Hi,

We have been asked to offer email services at a remote office in case the main office goes offline.

Our current Setup

IN -----> MX (10) -----> Barracuda (MAIN) ------> Exchange 2003 (MAIN)

Out -----> Exchange 2003 ------> Barracuda (Smart Host) ------> INTERNET

I have setup a secondary Exchange 2003 at VPN Connected remote office

IN -----> MX (15) -----> Barracuda (DR) ------> Exchange 2003 (DR)

Its a single domain.

Problem

Initially I setup a Second SMTP Connector with a higher cost using the DR Exchange Server
as the Bridgehead with the DR Barracuda as the SMARTHOST.

This worked fine for internal message and transferred all messages via the main site (Good)
but just queued External Messages when the main line went down (Bad)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I then removed this and Setup a Routing Group for the DR Exchange with an SMTP Connector to the DR Barracuda Smart Host with the DR Exchange as a member.

This worked fine for external messages (out via DR) but all internal messages for mailboxes not located on the DR Exchange server were queued as Undeliverable.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong.  The Exchange is due to be replace in the next 6 Months but they are hoping for a small DR Solution until then.

**Please note ...... When they are at the DR Office, only local mailboxes will need to be accessed all other mailboxes the messages just need to be queued.

Regards

Kim

Put each server in its own routing group.
Configure a SMTP Connector in each routing group pointing at the appliance.
Make sure there is no smart host on the SMTP virtual server.
Configure a routing group connector between the two routing groups.

You need to have a RGC going both ways for things to work correctly. Exchange isn't a one way street.

On the DR site all internal messages for mailboxes not on the local server site in the
"Messages Queued for deferred delivery" ?

That is why you need to have the RGC going both ways.
Do check the SMTP virtual server in the main location doesn't have any restrictions on it. Ensure that you can telnet to port 25 using IP address, NETBIOS name and FQDN.

I Have setup 2 RGC and 2 SMTP Connectors to the Barracuda's

I have turn off the SMTP at the main office and the VPN link to the DR.

Receiving mail from outside works fine

but

When trying to reply it is queued in the RGC to the main office and not using the SMTP Smart Host (DR Barracuda)

On the SMTP Connector, is the scope set to routing group or entire org?
