Shrink Exchange EDB File

Is there a way to shrink the EDB file such as stripping out HTML and images in old messages?

Current messages within the past year we need the HTML/Images but after that older messages text only is fine. We are running exchange 2003?

If a newer version of exchange does this or compacts the file size better we are not opposed to upgrading.

Nothing native can do that.
You might be able to find a tool that can remove the attachments for you, and store them elsewhere. Lots of those around.
That will create white space.

Ultiamtely if the database is getting too big and the age of Exchange 2003, an upgrade would be required.
