SCCM 2012R2 and SQL 2012 on different servers

I am planning on moving forward on setting up SCCM 2012 R2 and our Database Admin had a question, I really wasn't totally sure on an answer.  For SCCM 2007, we had SQL and the database loaded on the server, but due to Budget cuts we cant afford to buy another SQL 2012 License, I was wondering if we could install SQL 2012 on the SCCM server and install the required services (Reporting, Analysis ect )but separate the database and use the Databases on our primary SQL database server instead of installing a new database on the SCCM server itself and eating up another license.  Hopefully I worded that right, I am just not savvy on Databases and how SQL licensing totally works.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I believe one sql licence is included with system center suite. That sql is to be used only with system center.

System Center and SQL Server
All of the System Center products include SQL Server technology. Microsoft's licensing terms for these products allow you to run one instance of the SQL Server technology in one physical or virtual operating system environment (OSE) on one server, but only to support the System Center software. SQL Server client access licenses are not required for that use.
