Excel formula reference another worksheet

I am using Excel 2010 and came across a spreadsheet with formulas that was created by someone else.   In Sheet2 there is a formula that references a value in Sheet1 Cell A2 (see below):
=+Sheet1!A2
My question is the use of the plus + in this case, I haven't seen this being used before in an Excel formula so I am not sure of when it is required or the purpose, etc.   Thanks for any info.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Using + is something that was used in old Lotus123 spreadsheets, it works in Excel but it isn't required, you can use just

=Sheet1!A2
