Does Windows 8.1 require new graphic display driver?

Greeting Experts. It looks like the WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) has been update from 1.2 to 1.3 in the upcoming Windows 8.1.

As far as I know this basically mean that there are enhancement to the graphics driver in 8.1, and presumably that means drivers specifically for this version is required to take advantage of the new functionalities. In fact I see that there are already separate drivers for win 8 and win 8.1 in Nvidia and AMD.

What about Windows 8 drivers for older graphic cards? Can I still use Win 8 drivers in Win8.1. For example my laptop has a "Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family" graphic card that has only up to Windows 8 driver support, Intel hardly release any driver update for so I doubt there will be one for 8.1 in the foreseeable future.

Thanks in advance

Windows 8.1 should have the intel drivers inbuilt.

AFAIK, the WDDM upgrade does not require newer drivers for it working. But new features are only available with drivers based on WDDM 1.3, of course.

Well.. Windows 8 actually would detect and recognize my laptop graphic card driver, however some functionalities were missing such OpenGL support in photoshop CS6. I had to install the driver for it to enable this missing functionality.

Thats fine as long as long there won't be any loss for the existing functionalities in my current driver (WDDM 1.2)

Check with the maker of the computer on their Support Site. Intel Wireless Display for my ThinkPad X230 was just upgraded from V3.5 to V4.2. I am seeing a few updates from Lenovo and I am doing them.

So while Windows 8.1 should work fine with the drivers that came with Windows 8, I am doing the newest upgrades in advance of Windows 8.1.

Hi thinkpads_user. I double checked the website support page for my laptop still the same older Window 7 drivers, I had to use a modified one for Windows 8.

Doubt they will be releasing any in the foreseeable future. I guess the only thing left to do is to try the current windows 8 driver I have in Windows 8.1 I believe its out as of today so I will be performing the upgrade in the next couple of days after I am done backing up my data first just to play thing safe and will let you know how it goes

Thanks for all of the suggestions in advance, if anyone has further advise you are welcome to share
