Child domain in Exchange without a corresponding domain in AD?

We are considering a third party utility which will require mail to flow to a child domain in Exchange 2010 (

Do we need to create a corresponding child domain in Active Directory in order for this to work? Is there a way around having to build and maintain a domain of in order for mail to flow to

I hope I'm wording this correctly.

Is that subdomain going to be handled on the same Exchange Server or be sent to a different Exchange server?

if this is what you are after all you need to to is add another authoritative/accepted domain
