It cant be found in a dos search.

Is there a free good hex editor I can try?
Im not familiar with hex editors but Ive heard its the way to go.

Any point trying a data recovery tool like easy data recover or NTFS recovery tool
rather than a hex editor?

I have had great success with the Recuva application from www.piriform.com They have a free version you can try. I would suggest you run the deep scan in order to get the best data set to look through.
you can use EaseUS Data Recovery
its free and excellent
the feedback of EaseUS Data Recovery is really good when it comes to .doc files
