How to determine hardware requirements for a website

Hello,

How do you tell what hardware requirements for a website?  I am building a new website and need to select a hardware platform at a hosting company for the site.  I need to consider RAM, CPU speed, bandwidth for ports, and such.

Thanks.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Are we talking a Google rival or a personal blog.

So you are looking at a VPS just for a WP blog or is this in the shared hosted sphere?
Do you have experience at setting up Linux?
Shared hosting, specializing in WP if necessary, would be sufficient for WP.
What sort of visitors/page views are we talking about?
What hosting companies are you looking at?

A wordpress site can consume low to moderate resources.. most wordpress sites run quite well using shared hosting. Visitors per day/ database sizing, average page size, etc are metrics that you have to guess at or measure and monitor and scale your hosting plan as required. My suggestion is to start with shared hosting and only scale up if required.
