Windows Server 2012 Essentials as Virtual machine not getting a network connection

Hi All, and thanks for any hints or insights...

I am trying Windows Server 2012 Essentials as a virtual machine in Windows 8 Pro on a laptop I have.  It is an i5 with 8 GB of RAM, 4 GB dedicated to the VM.  The VM is created in Hyper V.  I just want to practice in this environment.  It's not going to be production.

The trouble is that during the install, it fails to find the network, whether the laptop is directly wired or using  my wireless connection.  After restarting the VM it continues the install only to fail because of no connection. If I halt the Installation Monitor, I can access the network setting of the VM,  There's one Network adapter set for DHCP.

What might I be missing here? Is there a way to bridge the connection from the host OS to my VM?

Thanks again for any hints.

In hyper-v manager on the host, you must create a new virtual network. Set it to external and select the network adapter that you want act as the adapter for the guest (it can be shared with the host as well.)

then in the guest VM settings, either change the existing virtual adapter to connect to the new virtual network or add a new adapter. Your choice. Remember that essentials only supports one NIC though. Si regardless of how you go abot it, make sure your VM has only one virtual adapter before you proceed.

finally, retry the installation.

Thanks for the great suggestion.  I set it as you indicated and it worked.  I had to reinitialize the VM first, but then it was fine.

Cheers!
