I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I also recommend Symantec Enterprise Vault.  We are using it and have about 3 TB of data archived.  Archiving is automated based on rules, group memberships, etc. and it is seamless for users (using Outlook interface as well as it works from inside Outlook Web Access interface also).

Thanks for the feedback, I been told about Symantec and also Mailstore. Symantec seems to be more favorable.

Please let me know in terms of implementing Symantec EV in the existing environment , is it as easy as install in a server and point to exchange server then set the rules ? Please let me know if you had encounter an difficulties or gotcha moment .
I'm thinking to do it in a lab environment as proof of concept , would this be possible ? Cheers

Has Powershell sent you back into the Stone Age?

If managing Active Directory using Windows Powershell® is making you feel like you stepped back in time, you are not alone.  For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why.

Your question is very wide, particularly as you haven't actually said what you want to achieve.
It is like asking someone what is the best car to buy, but failing to tell them you have three children and live up a mountain.

"Archiving" comes in two main variants.

1. Journaling.
This is where a copy of every message is taken at the Exchange level and stored elsewhere, usually in SQL. This is used for compliance purposes.

2. Item removal.
This is where messages are removed from the mailbox and stored elsewhere.

Many products can do both, but if you need option 1, then that changes what you can look at.

Personally I never recommend Enterprise Vault. I find it very expensive for what it does, unless they have changed things you cannot implement it yourself, you either go on a course or get consultants in to do it. I find it a very difficult application to work with and of course it is a Symantec product. Symantec haven't produced anything any good since Norton Utilities in the last century. They buy other products and wreck them.

You need to establish exactly what you want the product to achieve.
It also depends on the number of users, the number of emails you are processing etc.

You can go for Simpana.

Its support is best in class. And best thing about it, its simple solution for exchange backup and mail archiving.
