Domain resolution internally

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me out, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I can create an alias for a domain or domain NetBIOS name.

I used to work for a company whos domain name was   abc.local   NetBIOS abc  but you could also used simply the word domain to join pc's to the domain or resolve anything that asked for your domain name as well. So a user could type   abc\username or domain\username can anyone tell me how this was achieved ?

Regards

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
