I wasn't a fan of McAfee for it does eventually start to rip down the system when doing updates and scans.  Better off just loading a free one and keeping your money.  I use microsoft security essentials for my antivirus.  I also use CCleaner after i get done surfing the web to flush out all the garbage.

Yes, it's bulky.

There are several free alternatives available: AVAST, AVG, and Avira...  (recommendation: Avira).

If you wish that it be light on resources, please consider using Panda Cloud antivirus.

The above, in my experience, are better than M. But, which antivirus to use is generally a matter of personal preference and Internet habits.

You could also visit AV TEST web site to see their relative performances in tests.
