dell 2950 perc 5 raid controller showing foreign config and won't boot

We have a Dell PE 2950 with a PERC 5 raid controller card.    The server has 2 raid 1 drives on it.  We recently rebooted the server and then it wouldn't boot up.

when going into the raid configuration, virtual disk 0 (2 ssd drives)  shows online, but virtual disk 1 shows foreign.    We didn't change any drive locations, but did try reseating the drives with no change.   Not sure if we should be clearing the foreign config or importing the foreign config for virtual disk 1?

We thought the OS (VMware) was loaded onto vdisk0, but maybe it is on vdisk1.

Thanks.

Well, a "virtual" disk can't be foreign - individual disks are flagged as foreign, but if both disks in your VD1 RAID 1 are showing foreign, then you need to IMPORT the foreign config and let the controller bring online the right one, see if you can boot/access data, then test and/or replace/rebuild the remaining drive.  Once all is healthy again, look into ensuring all firmware is up to date.  Test remaining drives to make sure you have no more faulty drives.

Something happened to the raid configuration to where it lost its place and wants to dump back in the configuration settings on the disk.  Possibly a faulty disk

I ran the import of the foreign config and it came up with "unknown error" on 1of1.  If I look at the foreign config in the raid configuration it shows VD0 and then a VD255 which shows missing.   Not sure where the VD255 came from.

Your controller firmware, while still out of date, is at the minimum level required for most "import" functions.  At this point, the only thing left to try is what is called a "retag", where you basically configure the RAID array without initializing it - this writes the configuration information to the disks.  If you do not have a backup, then I would look into data recovery options at this point, rather than after trying the retag.
