Trouble installing usb controller

On a customers machine the usb ports no longer work.  There are question marks and exclamation marks in device manager for the usb controllers.  I connected a pci usb card and the same result.  Suggestions?

Try uninstalling the USB ports in Device Manager and allowing Windows to reinstall.  You may need to download chipset drivers from the manufacturer's web site for Windows XP.
you can check if it is a hard, or soft problem, by booting from a linux live cd, and test the usb :
here a Knoppox live cd

if the usb works ok - the problem is clearly software, and will be fixed by a fresh install, or by installing drivers

if you post the pc model - or mobo model, we can point you to the drivers

I had uninstalled the drivers and let Windows reinstall - same result.  Also had the most current chipset for the mobo. When booting in Linux I was able to determine it was a hardware mobo issue.
