SQL 2012 CALs

Hi Experts,

I have a question regarding the cal licensing with SQL 2012.

I have an application for sales.
I have 300 user in the company and the use all the application.
But the connect to the DB is always with the same user account inside the application.

How many cals I have to buy ?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You will need a CAL or EC license per client, even if they are connecting indirectly via a front-end application, hence please look at licensing the per core licensing model.

Hi this is not up to date, because it is including a processor license.
And this is not possible anymore with SQL 2012.

Hence my statement "hence please look at licensing the per core licensing model." Server 2012 does not offer per processor licensing.

As stated the other document contains references to the per processor licensing which may be confusing for some, hence please find an updated source below.

ok, this document is nice.
Can I have SQL Standard licensed per Core ?
I have seen this license costs about 3500 EUR, for 2 cores.
Can I connect here with unlimited users ?

dipopoCommented:
Hi yes this is correct, you can have this with Standard per core. Yes unlimited users as long as all the cores have been effectively licensed as stated in the document.

ok now my old servers have 2 processors with 4 cores each.
How many licenses I have to buy ?

X5460 processors

This processor has 4 cores.
2 processors have then 4x2 = 8 cores.

One license is for 2 cores.
8/2 =4 licenses

This means, to have unlimited users for my SQL2012 STD server, I have to buy 4 times the license.

This is 4x3500 EUR, right ?
And no CAL is needed extra right ?

Yes this is correct although I would look at obtaining this under SPLA for some flexibility. You should be able to receive this service from most licensing outfits.

You can also downsize the server to save on costs.
