VMware ESX/ESXi Backup Guide

If you have a licensed version of ESXi, which you have if you have Essentials (not the FREE version), you can use Veeam Backup and Replication see here

Unitrends also have free software up to 8 VMs!

Sure, there is a lots of "free" stuff, but if you are backing up it must be important?
Issues I found with free stuff is not that it does not work right now, but will it work some time later if the author does not update the software...
The least expensive yet excellent solution I recommend is Microsoft Home Server.
That is if the VM's are Windows based and you do not need to back up the raw VM's .
Do not let the name scare you, it is fantastic backup solution including one of the best de-duplication ration I've seen. Restore is solid and simple.
You can get an inexpensive white box or retired server to run it, install client on each VM and you are pretty much finished. Cost is less than $100!

Veeam and Unitrends FREE stuff works brilliantly, and is the same engine as the PAID commercial version!
