Email Encryption Solution

Hi Experts,

Im a IT Director of a hospital and I have to send Patient Health Information via e-mail. I'm looking a solution that help me to encrypt only the email that have patient information. This solution also must be HIPAA Compliance.  My e-mail server is hosted by Bluehost. Thanks in advance.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Also you can contact your 3rd party host for your tossing emails out through them so ask them about encryption.  The most likely already have a certificate in place already.

I would suggest self hosted email for your hospital.

We have our own servers and personel for email. Our hospitals run on an internal network, everything which leaves the network becomes encrypted.

It also depends on the email client you use, some have options to encrypt. If we need specific encryption, there are manual steps to take to encrypt the email with HIPPA information

there is no way to automatically encrypt it unless you do it all-inclusively

mail option

probably first step is to contact your hosting provider and see what they can offer - they may be able to offer microsoft's hosted solution (for example)

you could also consider client based solutions, such as s/mime, but to be frank they are hard to use on the current technology and require significant setup between each possible pair of endpoints.

If you move mail back in-house, then your best option is something oracle based (a technical term, the company Oracle don't offer oracle based encryption :)

Current major providers are zixmail, Microsoft, Cisco Ironport and Symantec's PGP Universal Gateway

ALL the above are american companies, I virtually guarantee that all of them leak to the NSA.

However, given that is true, what can you do?
