Please install new instance of sql server using below link:

1. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143219(v=sql.100).aspx

After installing attach SQL Server database mdf and ldf file to a new instance.

If you want to cancel the existing sql server instance you need to un-install the sql server.

Hi Nir,
To address the question in the subject "how do I open SQL server management studio" you should be able to browse to it by going to START>ALL PROGRAMS>MICROSOFT SQL SERVER 2008>Management Studio

If you don't see that in the list, you may not have it installed - I have installed R2 several times where the management studio failed to install during the installation but the rest of the product did.  So check that.  A short way to do it is just hit the Windows Key and in the prompt type SQL it's usually the first option that populates in the search results.

Once you get into the management studio right click on DATABASES in the object explorer on the left hand side and select ATTACH from the dropdown menu.  Click on ADD to browse to your MDF file.  I would take both your MDF and your LOG file and place them in the SQL directories first though.  Usually that is :

D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA

The Drive may vary though - my D drive is the normal MDF and my E drive is the Log yours may be different.

Try to do these in SSMS

Right-click "Databases" > Attach > choose the relevant mdf file
