Temporarily halt all VBA (add-ins etc) on an excel file

Hi everyone,
I have an issue when using certain large excel files - Excel locks up and the only solution I have so far is to completely remove certain add-ins from the system. It appears when I click on certain pages I get the flashing formula bar and hourglass and the system goes into a death roll. The only way out is to open task manager and kill the process.

Is there some way I can completely disable VBA temporarily so that other users who need to work with these add-ins can also use these large files?

Thank you!

You can prevent Excel from loading add-ins when it launches by holding the Shift key down.

You can launch Excel in safe mode. That will let Excel run with barebones functionality, and also prevent add-ins from loading. You can do this by holding the Control key down when launching Excel, or by using the /s switch when starting from the Run command line. Chip Pearson discusses the issue in more detail at http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/StartupErrors.aspx

If you find yourself needing to do this regularly, you can create a shortcut that launches Excel in safe mode. Microsoft discusses the issue in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919196/en-us (for Excel 2007, but similar procedure applies to other versions).
