How to manually install windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 is not an option on my computer. as per the Microsoft recommendations, I tried to manually install Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.exe (which was missing) and it failed. I went to safemode and could not install the KB2871389. I tried to startup normally but without out the startup programs and could not install it.

So because I can't install KB2871389, windows 8.1 does not appear as an option in the storefront.

Obviously something is wrong with my computer. I was hoping to get windows 8.1 installed to solve some of the weird problems.

Windows 8.1 appears as an option on my other computers.

Is there a manual way to install windows 8.1?

Thank you.

Windows 8 comes in to styles

Windows 8 RT and Windows 8 Pro

If you have a tablet, you can only install RT,
If its a tablet laptop with a real processor you can only install Pro

you can't upgrade RT to Pro, and you can't downgrade Pro to TR
Because the Hardware is incompatible

If you are upgrading a previous version of windows: win 7/vista/xp..etc, you can only use PRO since RT is only for the cheap tablets they sell

Sorry for not being clear. I have windows 8 pro 64 bit on a PC desktop computer.
I want to upgrade to 8.1
The option does not appear in windows store.
Most likely this is because I do not have KB2871389 installed.
I tried to install KB2871389 manually, but it failed.
So I wonder if there is a way to simply download a file to the DESKTOP and install windows 8.1 from there (and not from the store).

is the windows update and background intelligent transfer services started? (control panel -> administrative tools -> services)

Most updates have been installed automatically. Therefore, I assume that the windows update is running properly.

This one particular update did not install. I tried to manually install it and it failed. there was no explanation as to WHY it failed. See attached image.

I am running Norton 360. I am assuming that it is preventing viruses from taking over my computer. But perhaps some virus got through and that virus (malware) is preventing the update from being installed?

doesn't seem to be virus behavior

i would search for the log details (very verbose) but not sure where it might be; not in front of my windows 8 machine at the moment.  could look at the event logs but i'm guessing it will just say the update failed and won't provide details

might be in \users\<username>\appdata\local\temp
i'll have to try the 8.1 update in a test environment tonight if someone else doesn't find a solution first

I don't think you can get Windows 8.1 from updates, it's a manual process.

If you have a MSDN subscription you can download the full ISO image.

Windows 8.1 is supposed to show up in the store. If it doesn't, then it is because a particular update was not installed. I tried, but I cannot get that update installed.

I do not have an MSDN subscription.

i just tried my system and that update is already installed from windows update a couple weeks ago.  really wish the log files were available to see why the update fails there

Have a googling for the tool named SUR=system update readiness tool by Microsoft. It could help you installing updates.

I eventually used the DISM tool. After that, I was able to install the kb2871389 update. Once this was installed, the option for Windows 8.1 appeared in the Windows Store.
Thank you for all the suggestions.
