retail, one pc single user from HP.
I don't know if this detail is important to aadih but if it came preloaded on the PC it shouldn't be retail (usually boxed bought in a computer shop) but OEM (usually unboxed and included with a new PC).
We ordered it from HP.  It also came with two sets of disk.  One for windows 7Pro, and one for Windows 8 Pro.  The disk were packed in the box with the new PC.

All the HPs we bought here the disk came with them.  It also has a backup partition in case you have to re-install the OS.

What is  AADIH?  Never had a problem with upgrading any of the HP computers we have here.
All are windows 7 Pro.  This particular one is a 17" laptop with windows 8 Pro.  Its our first windows 8 computer we have.

Thanks

George

Not the same error, but similar in a writeup here. No solution or workaround yet, but its cause, perhaps:

the error I had is:

windows 8.1 could not be installed.  your operating  system was restored to a previous version.  0x80070004-0x-4000d.

it say it could not update to 8.1 and was restored to pervious version.  All updates are up to date on the computer.

Thanks
I have also experienced this same issue. should be able to grab event viewer logs tonight.
