Couple of things to try:<br />

Make sure the SharePoint site is in Trusted Sites, try setting the security level on Trusted Sites to low to see if that has any affect.<br />

Make sure the addon (in IE tools- internet options - programs - manage add-ons) for Office Document Cache Handler is enabled.<br />

We have recently had a problem checking out documents from SharePoint 2010 in IE. After clicking OK in the dialogue box that pops up when attempting to check out, we are getting this message:<br />

THE DOCUMENT COULD NOT BE CHECKED OUT. YOU MAY NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO CHECK OUT THE DOCUMENT OR IT IS ALREADY CHECKED OUT AND LOCKED FOR EDITING BY ANOTHER USER.<br />

and wondering if anyone knows what is going on. We CAN check out in other browsers. We also had a problem with some of the buttons not working in SharePoint, but we found a workaround by switching to IE8 browser mode (any clue on what the deal is there as well?), however, the checkout does not work there either.<br />
