Try running the Microsoft FixIt Uninstaller for Office 2010.  After a full uninstall with this, try to install again.

Thanks thinkspacesolutions. MS FixIt didn't work. I tried running installation directly from CD as opposed to from the network, but the issue remains
Is there any other MS Office products installed, previous versions perhaps?  Such as Visio 2003, Project 2007, etc?
The only MS products listed are .NET 4 Framework Client profile and MS Silverlight.

I am accepting a solution because it explains what caused the issue. Removing the cause did eliminate the issue. The solution was indeed found by myself.
