"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can boot your desktops directly to Internet Explorer in kiosk mode.  You'll need a web site provided by StoreFront or Web Interface for this to work.

This still uses the native OS on the desktop to a degree.  If you don't want to use the native OS at all you'll need to stream a .vhd directly to the desktop using Provisioning Services, though that isn't really VDI.

There are several third-party products that enable you to lock down the desktop so that it's more like a thin client and provide the behavior you've specified above:
- Microsoft ThinPC
- Norskale (provides user profile management too)
- TriCerat Simplify Lockdown

I spent some time testing Norskale and found it easy to use and efficient.  Microsoft ThinPC requires some infrastructure that I wasn't willing to put in place.
