mysql server isn't starting

Currently I am running OSX 10.8.5 and mysql server was working fine but now when i run

mysql.server start

it gives me the following error

. ERROR! The server quit without updating PID file (/usr/local/var/mysql/youkhana.local.pid).

The first thing I would do is rename that pid (or delete it) file and try again. Note that you may need to start the server as root, using sudo or by logging in as root.

Actually, the first step is to check if there is a mysql process running. Then check your disk space (probably not the issue ).

That's where I would start troubleshooting this issue.

I'm mobile so please excuse any typos.
