Toshiba Laptop shutdown shortly after booting to any CD

Hello,

I am working on a Toshiba Satellite L300D. Shortly after I boot to CD, the computer shuts down. I have tried a Clonezilla CD and a Windows Vista Home Prem DVD. I have tried using both the internal and an external DVD drive.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I had a similar problem with my own Toshiba notebook, and it was down to it overheating very quickly. I had to send it away for a warranty repair, but if it's out of warranty, and you are confident enough to look at it yourself, then I would suggest cleaning the CPU and heatsink, then applying some fresh thermal compound. Also, you may find that the fan is faulty and needs replacing.

OK, thanks. Do you know if there are bios logs that I can check to see if it is overheating? Could it be the power brick is not supplying enough power?

It's unlikely that the power supply is not supplying enough power - does it appear to charge the battery?

Also, have you tried powering the laptop on using the power adapter BUT with the battery removed?

Yes, the battery is dead, so I did take it out.

I will look at the overheating tonight.

Thanks!
