Office 2010 Word docs conversion

When users open Office 2010 documents, the files open up with File Conversion window.  Not all documents come up with this.  Why is this happening?  Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue.  Thanks.

What version of Microsoft Office shows the conversion dialog while opening Office 2010 Word documents (*.docx files, presumably)?

Are all users affected by this using the same version of Microsoft Office?

If some of the users have Office 2003 (version 11) or earlier, then this behaviour is expected if the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack" is installed.  Office 2003 and earlier create DOC and XLS files.  Newer versions of MS Office create a totally different file format with DOCX and XLSX extensions, and the compatibility pack allows Office 2003 and earlier (2000, 2002, 2003) to open them.

I believe that the conversion dialog will show regardless of whether the "confirm conversion at open" box under Tools > Options > General tab is ticked or unticked, because I think that only relates to the format converters that are installed by that version of MS Office, eg. MS Word 6, MS Works, and other older word processing file types.

All users are using Office 2010.  So far I've restored Public folder from backup.  That seemed to have resolved the issue.  I will monitor the problem for the next couple of days.

Thanks for the feedback.  Hopefully that will fix the issue.  I've never seen that behaviour before.

For your information the file became corrupt after one of the users found the Encryption malware on her computer.  This locked up her profile and required a $300 ransom to decrypt her files.  Luckily I had a good backup to restore from.  That computer has been removed from the network and will be wiped.

Thank you, Tlingit.  I wasn't expecting you to accept my comment.  Wow, so the File Conversion dialog can easily be a symptom of the encryption virus that seems to be sweeping like wild fire.  I hadn't considered that, but should have, because it seems such an obvious possibility after you know it to have been the cause.
