Why does ie 11 appear as ie 7 when browsing some websites? Fix?

I am using Internet Explorer version 11, under windows 8, and some of the websites I visit seem to recognize my browser as IE 7. Why is that? Can I correct this, so that it shows as the correct version when I visit these sites?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It could be a server-side scripting problem on the websites, but if you think that unlikely (i.e. it's happening a lot) you should repair or reinstall Internet Explorer.

what does it show?
in my 8.1 virtual machine with IE11

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

it will probably show windows nt 6.2 for you since you have 8 and not 8.1 but the browser version shows 11 then I'd say it's server-side and not you

When I use Chrome:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/30.0.1599.101 Safari/537.36

When I use IE 11:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; Trident/7.0; .NET4.0E; .NET4.0C; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.30729)

thanks for any comment, interpreting this, as to why I am advertising myself as IE 7, when I uese IE 11. This is clearly shown in the second example.

compatible; MSIE 7.0

oh...it's compatibility view
seems functionality is a bit reduced in IE11 for this feature; a menu item that is in IE10 isn't there now

Internet Explorer 11 simplifies web page compatibility for users by removing the Compatibility View button

I went to tool>compatability settings.
Found the option to turn on compatability for intranet sites was on already.
I deselected that (as it's the only thing remotely related) and this seems to have fixed at least one of the problem websites.

Results now, with intranet compatability off:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Of course, the whole matter is beyond logic, as I never was using intranet sites, just internet sites.
