Why dosent this stored procedure return any value ?

Hi!

Have made this stored procedure.
But it dosent return any value.

I used this code to test this:

exec GET_UserID @Usernm="Tor",@UsernameID=0;

UserID for Name=Tor -> 1
the stored procedure return -> 0

Why ?

SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF
GO

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[GET_UserID]
@Usernm varchar(30),
@UsernameID bigint OUTPUT
AS

--Step 1: Get UserID from table
SELECT UserID = @UsernameID

FROM dbo.UserTable
WHERE Name = @Usernm

RETURN

GO

you are not assigning anything to your variable:

SELECT @UsernameID = UserID
FROM dbo.UserTable
WHERE Name = @Usernm

or

set @UsernameID = SELECT UserID FROM dbo.UserTable WHERE Name = @Usernm)

If you want to return an integer value, like the number of rows affected in a SQL select statement, you use:

RETURN <integer value>

However, you are using a OUTPUT parameter. You should interrogate this parameter in you calling application / stored procedure.

You need your output parameter declared.

declare @UserNameID bigint
exec GET_UserID @Usernm="Tor", @UsernameID = @UserNameID output;
select @UsreNameID
