Passing variable through dynamic query

How do I get the below to return @AttendDate--currently, it returns 0

@AttendDate varchar(10) = '10/1/2013',
@SQLQuery nvarchar(max)

      ' + @AttendDate + '  AS AttendDate'

EXECUTE sp_executesql @SQLQuery
