Root Domain Controller and Child Domain Replication

Hello ,

I have a domain controller , windows 2012 with the domain " domain.local "

I want to add a child domain with name " child.domain.local "

The reason is because i want to have some kind of separation of my infastructure .

For example i want to have  mailservers.domain.local , virtualservers.domain.local

Any thoughts about this ? Do you thing that i add extra complication that is not needed ?

Also , if i create an OU and a user in root domain , does it replicate to the child domains or i must create the same user to both root domain controller and the child domain controller ?

Thanks

Hi,

How big an infrastructure are you creating?

Unless your looking at 10's or 100's or servers, OU's might be better as they keep the domains simpler.

Domains are separate, so ou in one domain does not copy across to another. However you can reference accounts in different sub domains.

Hello Gordon ,

We are talking about 80-100 Servers. By your thoughts i understand that it is better to stay with one root domain .

One last question ,

Child domain controller what DNS address must have ? Preferred the root domain controller or itself ?

That's a lot of servers.

having a child domain for them might be worth considering.

Need to know about what you are planning before being able to give you infrastructure design guidance.

In addition root domain users will be not avaialble in child domain nor child domain user object will be visible in root domain. In parent child domain only configuration, schema & Probably Some applications partitions is replicated.Replication between domains is for the schema to replicated from the root domain to the child domains so that they use the same object definitions.More see this :
