Estimating Website Traffic

If I wanted to find out the amount of unique visitors a website like SitterCity takes in each month (or quarter) what is the best way to do this?

Use the access logs from your web server.

If you have a host with CPanel, for Apache, for ex, you have AWStats, which presents the visitors in a "nice" graphical format.

Import googleanalytics to your site, get a nice overview and statistics

The problem with the 2 suggestions above is you don't have access to the logs.  You have to estimate using sites like https://www.compete.com, http://www.alexa.com, http://www.google.com/trends, https://www.quantcast.com/

Alexa is free, but not very accurate.  I will look at sites where I know the traffic and view the alexa data on that site, then compare to another site to help me estimate. I would only use it as a guess but not for a business plan.  I think the paid sites I mentioned like compete may be better.
