Hi,
I have built a brand new PC which will be used to connect to my TV some I can play music, pictures and videos.

Sometimes when I drag a video clip into the playlist and press the play button the sound will play but I just get a black screen. Other times it works just fine

This is likely due to the codec used to encode the video and/or audio, or a codec conflict.  In order to view the video you'll need to install the codec used to create the video.

Load a failed video into gspot to determine the codec.

This codec package will cover the majority:

Or use an alternate player, such as VLC media player.

I personally prefer XMBC, connected to my HDTV through a HDMI receiver, and smartphone as a remote control over WiFi.

Hi,

Would this be the case even though they will play 5 out of 6 times?

I normally use
K-Lite Codec Pack 10.05

Thanks

If it truly is the exact same video file playing 5 out of 6 times--- as simple as it sounds, I'd try rebooting your PC.  If the problem persists then look into 1) codec related conflicts, and 2) media player conflicts.  Try using one these programs to help identify the issue.  Again, using an alternative (reliable) player rather than fight ongoing codec issues may be a better approach.  If you want to continue the fight, try uninstalling other video player/creator programs until you locate the culprit.
