One Note Screen Clipping failing

I have a client that uses the screen clipping feature in One Note a lot. It used to work fine. Now when he clicks it, it says "before you use this feature you must start one note for the first time". He's definitely started it before. I can use the screen clipping fine in One Note on my computer, but when I log on to his computer as myself I get the same error he does. I repaired One Note then uninstalled/reinstalled it. I searched online and the only other suggestion was to set it so the icon for One Note displays in the system tray and it already does. I don't know what else to try. He's using One Note 2010 on a Windows 7 laptop.

Yeah I use that a lot too. In the meantime, you could use the Windows screen clipping tool, called "Snipping Tool", it can be useful also.

Now, you have started OneNote after your reinstall correct? Also, can you check your default printer?

Oh, and can you check Windows Update and make sure everything is updated to latest versions/patches?

I am experiencing the exact same problem.  Windows 7, Office 2010.  I can load One Note and create pages in it.  But if I right click and choose Send to OneNote the error comes up   "before you use this feature you must start one note for the first time"
The one note icon is on the system tray. So it is running.

The issue with our system was due to a program we use call Appsense for VDI. This is what we had to do to fix it.

Make sure the client has admin rights. Go to start > run and type services. msc. Stop the AppSense User Virtualization Service, Open One Note (the window with the client's initials will open as if it's for the first time(, then close the application. Restart the AppSense User Virtualization Service.  One Note application should now allow the clipping function.

Our issue may not be the same as others. It was due to the appsense program we have installed on workstations that allows people to use VDI.
