Inheritable Permissions

On the properties of a users folder I removed the check for "Allow inheritable permissions etc. ". Then I removed a group\users. Now I cannot access several of the folders within that users folder. When I go to the properties of the restricted folders to add permissions back to the folder it says, "You do not have permission to view the current permission settings for 'folder' , but you can make permission changes. Then, when I try to add permissions under the security tab and hit "apply" I get the message, "Unable to save permission changes on 'folder' Access is denied.

I was unable to solve the problem, so I had to move the data entirely to another server.

Wasn't really a solution but a workaround.
