I want to write something that will automatically retrieve data from a web server,  they recommend SOAP or REST.  I am an MS Access / VBA programmer.  how do I learn these?  or have these been replaced with .NET?  Can I do this without buying the $12,000 version of Visual Studio?

Thanks............Rick

Find a tutorial or two. REST is probably the easier of the two to digest. WCF can be easier/faster to get up an running.

or have these been replaced with .NET?
You're comparing apples to oranges. SOAP and REST are related to the development of web services (the former being a protocol and the latter being an architectural style). .NET is a framework of classes for building managed applications, which can include both SOAP and REST services.

Can I do this without buying the $12,000 version of Visual Studio?
Yes, though I don't think VS costs that much  ; )

There are free Express editions of Visual Studio. You will want the web edition.
