Stuck downloading setup data on Windows Media Center

Running Windows 7 SP1 64 bit Professional with Avermedia A188 Pure DVB PCI TV Tuner

Windows up to date,
and Avermedia using latest drivers.
TV function works fine with Avermedia's software. Location Australia.

However when configuring Windows Media Center it gets stuck at the TV configuration setup in Windows Media Center - at downloading TV setup data. Just sits there - no download progress on download bar - no errors.

Have googled a number of suggestion from the internet - none have worked.
(and I don't want to reinstall Windows!)

Here's what I have tried.....

(1) delete \progdata\microsoft\ehome contents - doesn't fix the problem
(2) as admin run in \windows\ehome mcupdate.exe -MediaCenterRecoveryTask - this seems to reset Media Center OK but doesn't fix download problem
(3) combination of (1) and (2)
(4) trying to run mcupdate.exe -uf -pscn0 –dbgc        causes mcupdate to exit with a Windows Media Update Manager has stopped working error
(5)  trying to run mcupdate.exe  no switches alone gives above error
(6) as does  C:\Windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe "-manual -nogc -p
(7) have tried turning firewall off too

None of the above have solved the problem

I had similar problems with my SiliconDust tuner and the solution was to uninstall/reinstall PlayReady. I don't know if it will work for your problem, but it can't hurt to try. Here are the instructions I used from the SiliconDust website:

ASKER

Thanks Joe - alas I had tried that as well with no success
Is the system date/time correct?
Good idea and by crikey it was on AM not PM.
Alas didn't work.

Just to be sure I deleted files in progdata\microsoft\ehome

and after a reboot did a mcupdate.exe -MediaCenterRecoveryTask

So good idea but still no joy.
Hmmm, ok, completely different approach...try a third-party EPG provider, such as Big Screen EPG:
http://bigscreenglobal.com/bgproduct.aspx?PID=BSEV1

mobilewares.net is based in Melbourne, so it should work in your neck of the woods. They have a free trial...can't hurt to give it a spin. May not be the permanent solution you want, but should be an interesting data point. Regards, Joe
Trying that product but have hit activation problem with it
Did you sign up for a new account? It says you must be signed into a <bigscreenglobal.com> account to access the trial.
Yes I did. Have asked support help - somewhat puzzled.
Does sound puzzling...creation of a new account and activation of a trial should be routine stuff. Will be interesting to hear what their tech supp says.
Bummer! Any comments yet from their tech supp?
Alas no. Will alert you when They do. They list no phone number so I am dependent on an email response.
Have 2nd support email for activation help.  30 hours later after first - and now up against a weekend.
That's too bad. Back to the WMC EPG for a moment. PlayReady has always been the culprit for me. Since the time was wrong on your system and you corrected it, I suggest another uninstall/reinstall of PlayReady now that the time has been fixed.
Did that again as requested - rebooted - no difference after reinstall.

Incidentally and hopefully unrelated - Avermedia card has always despite latest Avermedia drivers goes offline and requires a reboot to come back. Always back on reboot. The Avermedia software runs the TV so the card does work. But after some in and outs and general operation of the computer the card goes offline. Interestingly very occassionally after a reboot one needs to run the Avermedia TV program to get the card "working" - i.e. recognised so that WMC will "see it".

Horrid behaviour.
Sorry for the delay in responding...I did not receive the usual EE email saying that you had posted a comment...I just happened to notice your comment when accidentally visiting the tab in my browser. Anyway, yes, that's horrid behavior! Overall, I really dislike WMC. My hope is that the TiVo folks will port their software to W7 and/or W8. If not, maybe someone else will create (and support/maintain!) some good PVR software. I had high hopes when Google acquired SageTV, but that was more than two years ago and nothing has come from the acquisition. Now there's even talk of killing GoogleTV, not that there's much to kill. I also had hopes that Beyond TV would continue development, but I think the last release of that was three years ago. I see that GB-PVR has morphed into NextPVR, which I haven't tried yet. I think there's a tremendous market opportunity for high-quality PVR software (like TiVo) on the Windows platform. OK, jumping off my soapbox now. :)   Regards, Joe
Thanks for that information.

Still no response from Big Screen Global despite 2 emails
I have pretty well Googled the issue to death and found a few other ideas but none worked.
Well there is one left - reinstall Windows. But for that I'd rather be without WMC and keep using Avermedia's MediaCenter app instead.

What exactly did you VPN to? In any case, that's great news! I was very happy to try to help you during the troubleshooting process. Regards, Joe
Just a commercial service that would give me a San Francisco IP address. i.e. USA IP address - so the WMC software appeared to want a US IP to continue.  Even though I configured for Australia as the region.  Weird!

And thanks for all your ideas too.
Thanks for the explanation...very interesting!

You're welcome...glad to brainstorm this one with you...it was an intriguing problem!
And just for any others reading later - the Windows 7 64 bit Professional SP1 Win OS was original Australian OEM stock, properly activated. Language and region set to Australia.

And Big Screen Global never responded either.
Only solution that has worked. Was just a hunch.
