What replaces ForeFront for frontend Exchange mail protection?

if you mean Antimalware protection, Microsoft has a product called Exchange Online Protection (former Forefront online protection) which handles email scanning for spam, malware and custom rules.

Looking for something in house,  I used ProofPoint in my previous position.  It's to expensive.

Microsoft replaces Forefront with Exchange Online Protection.

For other suppliers look at this report which details who is market leader etc

But you will find the best solutions and actually the most affordable all have a subscription model and are cloud based.
