As far as I understood your requirement is that software has no interface and works as a background service. Correct?
Also what are you imaging? Data or entire system?

While it does cost money, ShadowProtect by StorageCraft, is the best software I have found for backup and disaster recovery.  They offer both desktop and server versions, as well as virtual server options, that all have the same capabilities, but the virtual and desktop versions are less expensive.  It runs as a service, and runs very well.

My thoughts on backups are that it is important to know that you will be able to restore the data whena and if you ever need to, and I have never been impressed with free software's ability to restore, or rather its ability to make me trust that I will be able to restore.  ShadowProtect has many options to test and retest the backup data on regular basis to ensure that everything is intact and waiting to be restored.
