410 Page Gone

I'm responding with a 410 Gone for pages that no longer exist (and will never exist again) but in WMT they still keeping coming up.
Is this just Google slow in the uptake or should I do something different.

Most likely google is going to be a little slow; I have updated pages and it has taken it days to catch up.
