Hi Experts

I am running a SBS2011 Standard server, lately some of the server backups have been failing. It seems to work one night then fail the next few nights, very random.

The error in the backup window is:
"Creation of the shared protection point timed out. Unknown error (0x81000101)"

The event log error is:
"Log Name:      Application
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Date:          28/10/2013 11:10:22 PM
Event ID:      521
Task Category: None
Level:         Error
Keywords:
User:          SYSTEM
Computer:      PPFMPSERVER2.ppfmp2.local
Description:
The backup operation that started at '¿2013¿-¿10¿-¿28T12:00:21.824000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348001'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
Event Xml:
<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">

    <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Backup" Guid="{1DB28F2E-8F80-4027-8C5A-A11F7F10F62D}" />

    <Keywords>0x8000000000000000</Keywords>
    <TimeCreated SystemTime="2013-10-28T12:10:22.994501100Z" />
    <EventRecordID>396551</EventRecordID>
    <Correlation />

    <Channel>Application</Channel>
    <Computer>PPFMPSERVER2.ppfmp2.local</Computer>
    <Security UserID="S-1-5-18" />
  </System>
  <EventData>
    <Data Name="BackupTime">2013-10-28T12:00:21.824000000Z</Data>
    <Data Name="ErrorCode">2155348001</Data>
    <Data Name="ErrorMessage">%%2155348001</Data>
  </EventData>
</Event>

following the backup error in the event logs is a whole bunch (about 200) of SQL errors SQLVDI, MSSQL$ESP, SQLVDI, SQLWRITER, MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE ETC

Apart from these errors which only appear after the backup fails I have a lot of VSS Warnings:
Event ID: 8230
"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Failed resolving account spsearch with status 1376. Check connection to domain controller and VssAccessControl registry key."

I have googled my backups problems, initially it was because there were updates for SharePoint, I ran the PSCONFIG, it worked for 1 night then I started getting the errors above.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been working on this for about 2 weeks.

Hello, your VSS is being 'locked'. After you perform the back-up restart the VSS service. Or restart your server, then restart the back-up then it will finish.

The best is to create a Scheduled task that will restart the VSS at a given time each day, best 5 minutes before the back-up.

When you open services.msc you should restart the Volume Shadow Copy Service. :)
