Good morning Experts,

I am encountering a problem reported by a user who receives a daily report. He has expressed that he can't open the .XLS attachment when saving through Outlook Web Access or on his phone. The text when opening the document states "The attachment was removed because it contains data that could pose a security risk". We are running Exchange 2010 SP3 with Update Rollup 2 on Server 2008 R2. There was alot of information out there about this but I have had no luck with a resolution. Below are the steps I have tried.

1. Confirmed the following fix was contained in a previous update: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/983200
2.Verified the BypassOwaXmlAttachmentFiltering was set to true already in the web.config
3.Added .XLS to the force Save list for both Public and Private computers in the OWA properties.
4. Tried adding the .XLS attachment to the Always allow list for both Public and Private computers.

Still the issue persists. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jesse Conkey

Also just want to ask whether that user is able to open the same file on Outlook ? or any other user whose excel attachment or any other attachment is not opening via OWA.

It appears to be an organization wide issue as the same document will not open for the administrator account through OWA. Other documents appear to open with no problem (.XLSX, .DOCX).I am curious if this may be something wrong on the senders end as I have just created a test .xls attachment and emailed it from my Gmail account and I was able to open the attachment with no problems.

I have tried zipping the attachment and sending from another external account. When opening this attachment I got the same error. Also tested from the the gmail and hotmail address with a test.xls and it opened fine. I am seeing if we can have the sender of the problematic email create a test .xls file and email it to see if the issue lies with all from this address or just these automatically generated emails.

May be problem from his Antivirus side, if issues lies within that sender.

We determined it was only this one daily attachment as the company was able to create an excel spreadsheet and send it fine. We left this with their IT department. Thanks for all your suggestions.
