Are you looking for a torrent download application such as Transmission (http://www.transmissionbt.com/) or a video player with support for multiple codecs such as VideoLAN VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html)?

VLC only has so many compatible codecs,  I want the ability to play all file types.

Then, my friend, you are in search of 'the holy grail' of video players.  VLC is probably the best player for osx in terms of the largest range of codecs supported.

Personally I use Plex media server and player as it supports a lot of codecs too and turns osx into a home entertainment centre and can stream to iPad.

If any other experts can suggest alternatives I'd be delighted to hear.
