I have a new jboss server running on my local desktop - a Windows 7 host with 8 GB memory and i5 processor.

The jboss is version 6.1. When  run the standalone.bat, this is what I get back:

Calling "C:\bin\jboss\jboss-eap-6.1\bin\standalone.conf.bat"
=======================================================================

  JBoss Bootstrap Environment

  JBOSS_HOME: C:\bin\jboss\jboss-eap-6.1

  JAVA: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.7.0_40\bin\java

  JAVA_OPTS: -client -Dprogram.name=standalone.bat -Xms512M -Xmx1024M -XX:MaxPer
mSize=256M -XX:MaxHeapSize=256m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Djboss.modules.
system.pkgs=org.jboss.byteman

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Incompatible minimum and maximum heap sizes specified

What do I need to do to get it working?

try replacing -XX:MaxPermSize=256M -XX:MaxHeapSize=256m with -XX:MaxPermSize=256M -XX:PermSize=256m

There is no param called MaxHeapSize. Refer http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/tech/vmoptions-jsp-140102.html for more details on VM options.
