I had always lumped twitter into the 'all that other kid crap' category until I heard the video below.

Now that I see how apparently wrong I might have been, I am looking for a way to monitor twitter for keywords and auto-respond with a dm?

Assistance is greatly appreciated.

hashtag.org - which hastags are popular

wthastag.com - definitions of hastags

trendspotter.com - trends of popular topics

clout.com - who has clout in that area

Twitter Interactions:  re-tweet, reply, dm, list, and favorite

I think you are possibly on a the right track although I don't see how that video alone was the one thing that changed your mind.

You would first need to determine the type of info you want to target.  Read those tweets then post a direct message.  All of this would be using the twitter api https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1.1

For example, to post a direct message, that person first needs to follow you.  Part of your business logic needs to determin this. From there:
https://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1/post/direct_messages/new using the url https://api.twitter.com/1/direct_messages/new.format
 and data sample s

If you do a little more digging into any of this,  you will find automated responses do not get the best results.  What I would try to start is create a manual saved search and view the results with your eyeballs.  Pick some of the results out and manually send the a DM (As long as they follow you) and see what happens.

The main problem you are going to have is it sounds like you are just starting out and therefor will not have anybody following you and that of course means no DM.
