installing sql server 2008 R2

I'm trying to install  server 2008 R2.  the issue appears to be, I'm told, that I cannot have the domain controller role on the server.

What I'm trying to do is have all network traffic to  go through the server.  Please let me know if that is the fact.  I lose access internet access.

The domain controller is usually a dedicated box. On top of that you cannot install SQL server on a domain controller as it clearly states. This has nothing to do with the internet connection though. The SQL server will be accessible inside your domain and the box itself will have access to the internet. If you need to be able to access the SQL server form outside your domain through the internet you will have to set it up for that but normally you don't want to expose it to the outside world.
