canon powershop is cheap.. how is quality?

canon is industry leader.. their powershots are pretty cheap on their website.. does that mean there is not enough technology or durability on these products? (compared to a more costly option in canon itself)

http://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/clearance/clearance-powershot-digital-cameras/clearance-powershot-digital-cameras/powershot-a1200-silver-refurbished

i am looking for a reasonably priced camera for a family without compromising too much of quality....

That's a discontinued model... but I wouldn't buy it just because it uses only 2 AA cells.

If you can't find one that uses 4 AA cells, I would get one that takes a lithium ion battery pack.

e.g. the PowerShot SX170 IS
16x optical zoom (over 3x as much optical zoom as the A1200)
16 Megapixel CCD

You can find it for just a dollar cheaper on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EFILR6E - check the reviews there), so buying it direct from canon makes sense.
Genuine Canon NB-6LH Li-Ion packs can be found for $50 - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EL3SJN2

If you'd like to try cheaper batteries in it, look at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0041TRO3W
When those packs die after a half hour of shooting and a couple dozen charges, at least you'll still have an extra travel charger to carry in your vehicle.
