This is a temporary solution (probably), my question pending (2013-11-05 at 16:15:59 ID28285892Tags:

Provides more information, basically I only have remote access to the server and it appears that Backup Exec 2012 probably needs a hotfix to be installed but a pre-requisite to this is that Service pack 1a needs to be applied. I am trying to ascertain whether or not the service pack is already included in Backup exec 2012 which was only purchased and downloaded from Symantec within the last 2 months. Live update indicates that Backup Exec 2012 is up to date bur does this mean that service pack 1a is installed ?
The About information shows the version to be 14.0 Revision 1798 (64-bit) but does not mention any service pack level.
Even when I have this information, I am loathed to perform this update remotely on a live server (the client only has one server), especially as the Disk space on the server is exceptionally low.
With regard to your reference 1) in your reply, I have searched the C: drive where Backup Exec 2012 is installed and cannot find "bemcmd", maybe Backup Exec 2012 does not provide this functionality ?

Please take a look on this 2 articles on Symantec here:
1º How to configure a pre-command operation to automatically perform a Long or Quick Erase on a piece of media before backup begins
2º When using the Backup Exec command line utility (bemcmd) to perform media operations as a pre-command in a backup job, the media operation is not performed until after the backup job completes
But I have a question why do you need to erase the tape - an overwrite job will do that for you so no need.
