I'm getting the below error in my VMWare VM backup software.  The error below this one is from the event log.  I tried the hot fix KB940349.  In the past when I had VSS issues this hot fix did the trick but now I can't get it to work at all.  Any ideas?

Failed to prepare guest for hot backup. Details: VSSControl: -2147467259 Backup job failed. Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data. VSS asynchronous operation is not completed. Operation: [Shadow copies commit]. Code: [0x80042301].

I found an iSCSI volume that was shared with a windows 2008 server.  This particular server is 2003.  It was giving a ton of errors.  I removed that iSCSI mount..  After running updates I saw I couldn't event access the VSS shadow copy tab on the drive properties.  I re-registered VSS and the writers started to work again.  I'm not sure to exactly which thing fixed it but it's working again.   The steps mentioned in dipop where the steps I took to determine which writers where not working.

Anyway.. it's fixed for now.

These steps at least help determine which writers are not working.
