Old messages suddenly delivered

I have had 2 reports of the past month or so where a user suddenly receives mail from a month or more ago. These do not appear to be old messages form the "I have already seen them" point of view.  These seem to be unseen messages that are a week to a month or so old that are suddenly delivered. I am not sure if this is an Outlook issue or an Exchange issue. It is Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010.

You need to look at the headers of the messages and message tracking to see when the message went through Exchange.
A common cause is AV software scanning something it shouldn't be, hangs on to the message and a server/service restart releases the message.

I will check the header info, but there has not been a server restart in about a month and the release did not coincide with that.

Will this happen even if there is nothing showing up in the queues?

Yes, because the messages aren't visible to Exchange until the AV software releases them.
